EOJ Official conducts
briefing on Assistance to the Philippines
March 11,
2009
On
March 11, 2009, Mr. Yusuke Mori, an official of the
Embassy of Japan (EOJ), briefed representatives from the
Department of Agriculture (DA) XII, Bureau of
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) XII and NRO
XII on Japan’s assistance to the Philippines. The
orientation briefing was conducted at RDC XII
Conference Room, NEDA XII Bldg, Cotabato City. He
cited the Rice-based Farming Systems Training and
Support for the ARMM which may be replicated in
Region XII. With the project, there was a notable
increase in rice yield, vegetable self-sufficiency
and incomes of beneficiaries. While constraints
existed, project sustainability could be
strengthened by passing on techniques to farmers and
improving seed/seedling production by the farmers.
DA XII also presented the condition of agriculture
and fishery in Region XII. Discussions delved on
assistance to farmer-beneficiaries both by the DA
and the LGUs, and possible areas of support for the
Japanese Government.
Mr. Mori also explained about one of the most
important pillars of Japan’s Country Assistance
Strategy which is the Assistance for Peace and
Stability in Mindanao. The Embassy of Japan provides
assistance under this scheme through its Grant
Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.
While no commitments were made on the part of EOJ,
the meeting provided a forum for Mr. Mori to gather
data and exchange information for possible future
cooperation of Region XII with Japan ODA. NEDA XII
and DA XII on the other hand, committed to submit
project concepts for further study by EOJ.
